Required Tools and Materials
- Tape measure
- Plywood (3/4 inches thick)
- Ladder
- 2 x 4s
- Wood posts
- Mattress
- Pillows
- Nails
- Screwdrivers
- Hammer
- Saw
- Electric drill
Measure the Bed Size and Ceiling
A loft bed is usually for a single person, so a bed measurement of 78 x 48 inches will be sufficient. A typical loft bed is 8 ft high. However you can increase the height if your ceiling allows it.
Create the Posts
You can start building a loft bed with the posts. Use the tape measure so you can saw the wood at the appropriate length. Drill holes in the wood posts. Carry each wood post to the right spot. If you’re going to paint the wood, you may do so now. Alternatively you can paint the structure when you’ve finished building it.
Construct the Wooden Box
Take the 2 x 4s. Saw each piece according to the desired lengths. Use the mattress to guide you during the cutting process. Screw or bolt the wood pieces together. If you want to add rails, prepare four more wood pieces. Make sure they are of the exact length as the wood boards. Nail them atop the four wood boards you just cut.
You’re almost finished building a loft bed. Grab the wood boards and put it on the plywood. Put four nails in it. You need to hoist the wood box up the posts. You’ll need at least one assistant to help you. When the box is at the right height, fasten them with nails.
Construct the Ladder
You can use wood slats or some of the lumber left. Cut two wood pieces that are of the same length. They must be tall enough to reach the bed. Now saw the steps. The number of steps required and their width is up to you. Set the two long wood pieces side by side on the floor. Put the shorter wood steps between them.
Make sure the long wood pieces are aligned correctly. Put one nail on the side and hammer it. Repeat the process on the other side. You are done building a loft bed when the steps are all nailed. Now you just have to hoist the ladder up to the bed side and bolt it.
Tips and Warnings
Work out the logistics before starting the project. Just to be sure, bring more supplies than what your plan calls for. In case you make a mistake, you’ll have replacement parts available.
Remove the furniture in the room before you start. You (and your assistants) will need plenty of space. You can avoid accidents by removing all the furnishing. Wearing safety goggles and gloves will protect you from splinters and wounds.
If you don’t have gloves, keep an anti-disinfectant close by. Keep these simple guidelines in mind and you won’t have problems building a loft bed.
